How to search
- Open the Find a Business page using the button above and choose Advanced Business Name Search for explicit matching and status controls.
- Enter a business name, or a registry number in its own field.
- For a name search, choose a matching method. “Exact words in any word order” is the default.
- Choose Active and Inactive, Active only or Inactive only.
- Select Search for Business Name.
- Compare the entity type and status, registry number, name status and business name in the results. Select the business name or registry number to open the record.
- On the record, review the Associated Names, Name History and Summary History sections.
- To research relationships, use the associated-business searches (by business or by individual). Associated names do not prove ownership.
What you can expect to find
- The results table has the columns Record No, Entity Type, Entity Status, Registry Number, Name Status, Name and Assoc Search. Type and status appear as codes. Check Oregon’s official definitions before expanding them.
- A record can show the registry number, entity type, entity status, jurisdiction, registry date, next renewal date and a Renewal Due heading.
- It also has the entity name, a foreign name heading, the principal place of business, the registered agent’s name and address with start and resign date headings, a mailing address, and president and secretary entries. Which fields appear varies by entity type, and our example was a nonprofit.
- Name History lists name type, status, and start and end dates. Summary History lists image availability, action, transaction and effective dates, status, name and agent changes, and a dissolved-by heading.
- The associated-business searches offer different role menus. By Individual includes Agent, General Partner, Member, Managing Partner, Manager, Partner, President, Registrant, Authorized Representative, Secretary and Trustee. By Business offers Agent, General Partner, Mailing Address, Member, Managing Partner, Manager, Partner, Registrant, Authorized Representative and Trustee.
Limitations, fees and notices
- Search and viewing a record are free. The “login” in the advanced search address did not require a user login.
- Official guidance says many filing images are available through Summary History. Older or unavailable images and certified copies use a separate request route. We did not test an image download, so don’t assume every document is free.
- Paid services are separate. An online Certificate of Existence is $10 and requires a login to the Oregon Business Registry, and a certified copy of a document file or specific document is $15 through the copy-request form.
- The Business Name Availability Check is a preliminary screen. Oregon’s help says the final decision is made at filing, so it is not an approval or a certificate of availability.
- There is a separate search of active-business data, active records only, with documented outputs such as registry number, name, type, registry date, agent and address, mailing address and associated names. We read its instructions but did not test it. Don’t carry its active-only limit over to the main registry search, which can show inactive records.
- Not every operating business must register in every circumstance, and registration does not verify required occupational or business licensing. The registry isn’t a comprehensive licensing or ownership database.
