Maryland Business Entity Search
In Maryland, business entity records are kept by the State Department of Assessments and Taxation, not by the Secretary of State. Its Maryland Business Express site lets you search by business name or Department ID. Searching and viewing general information worked without a login or payment in our review.
Official agency: Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT), Corporate Charter Division

Search methods offered
- Business NameChoose the Business Name option and enter the name.
- Department IDChoose the Department ID option and enter the ID. The text field label changes to match your choice.
How to search
- Open the Maryland Business Express entity search using the button above.
- Choose Business Name or Department ID.
- Enter the name or ID and select Search.
- Compare the Department ID, Business Name and Status in the results. Old names appear alongside current ones, and a Department ID search can return more than one name row for the same entity.
- Select the business name. In our test the record opened in a new browser tab.
- Review General Information, then Filing History or Annual Report/Personal Property for those sections.
- Use Order Documents only if you need the separate paid document service.
What you can expect to find
- The results list shows Department ID, Business Name and Status, including historical “Old Name” entries.
- A record can show the Department ID Number, Business Name, Principal Office address, Resident Agent name and address, Status, Business Type, Business Code, Date of Formation/Registration, State of Formation, Stock Status and Close Status.
- The record has a Status field and, separately, a Good Standing statement. Treat them as two different things.
- The record page has sections for General Information, Filing History and Annual Report/Personal Property, plus an Order Documents action.
- The Resident Agent is the entity’s agent, not an owner.
- We reviewed one corporation’s record, so other entity types may show different fields.
Limitations, fees and notices
- Name search, Department ID search and general-information viewing were free and needed no login in our test. No CAPTCHA appeared.
- Official instructions say most business documents filed after August 2001 can be viewed free. In Filing History, an eye icon shows a document is available online and a crossed-out eye shows it isn’t. That does not make every historical record or certified copy free.
- Paid services are separate. The fee schedule lists $20 for certified copies and Certificates of Status, and $20 more for expedited processing. A 3% technology fee applies to some online card or PayPal payments, and a mailed certificate is $20. We did not test checkout, so don’t treat these as your final total.
- SDAT says the database covers registered corporations, LLCs, LLPs, LPs, LLLPs, professional corporations and trade names, and that it is updated online Monday through Friday. It does not list every business operating in Maryland.
- Certificates cover fewer record types than the lookup does. The official guidance excludes several categories, including trade names, name reservations, sole proprietorships and general partnerships.
- The record page address depends on your earlier search selection, so link people to the search page rather than a record.
- A search result is not a name-availability determination or a name reservation.
